Welcome to Water Safety Learning

At Swim Stars Swimming School, our aim is to make swimming fun while giving every learner the confidence, knowledge and practical skills they need to enjoy the water safely. Water safety is not just for swimming lessons — it is for pools, beaches, rivers, lakes, holidays and family days out.

This page shares simple, child-friendly guidance that families can revisit together, helping children understand how to make safe choices and what to do if they ever feel unsure around water.

Why Water Safety Is Important

Learning to swim is an amazing life skill, but children also need to understand water safety. A confident swimmer still needs to know when to stop, think, ask for help, follow rules and stay calm in unexpected situations.

Confidence

Children who understand water safety can feel calmer and more prepared around pools, beaches and open water.

Awareness

Children learn to notice hazards such as deep water, slippery edges, waves, currents, cold water and unsafe areas.

Life Skills

Simple actions such as staying together, listening to adults, floating and calling for help can make a big difference.

Water safety helps children enjoy the water with confidence, respect and care.

How Parents Can Help Educate Children

Parents and carers are children’s most important safety role models. Talking about water safety little and often helps children remember what to do when they are excited, distracted or in a new environment.

  • Talk about the water safety rules before visiting a pool, beach, lake or river.

  • Always supervise children closely near water, even if they can swim.

  • Encourage children to ask before entering water and to stay where they can be seen.

  • Practise floating, safe entries, listening skills and calling for help during swimming lessons.

  • Lead by example by following signs, staying in safe areas and respecting lifeguard advice.
